Random Picture to an amazing portrait

Portraits are difficult, especially if you’re trying to make a portrait of a person. The hard part is capturing the character of the person. I have tried a portrait in the past. The biggest problem which caused it not to be successful is because “I tried to soon.” Because I was still in the infant stage of my learning. I don’t regret trying, the biggest thing was my motivation dwindled, and I didn’t pick the right picture to reference.

I hadn’t considered trying again until a random picture was sent to me. My mother shared a picture of her dad in my family chat. As soon as I saw it, something changed. I started the processing, figuring, and planning. The normal trying to talk myself out happened. But my heart-maintained control.

I started carving, and of course the process was incredibly slow. I wanted to make sure every step was educated. I also made sure to talk “a little bit” at a time. Considering you can always remove more, but it’s difficult to add. I got to the point of the carving which was roughly shaped but not sanded and needed a lot of fine detail work.

The hard thing for me is keeping projects a secret, I love showing them off at different stages. I was talking to my mom and showed her. I have never seen my mom speechless. She immediately knew who it was. When I posted on social media, everyone in my extended family new who the portrait was. I concluded I capture the persons true character.

After finishing this portrait and having learned a lot. I had more confidence in my skills. This opened the door for me to try more portraits. I was very grateful that I was able to use my skills to create a portrait of Cameron West. I have no idea if I will create more portraits. Will see what I am inspired to make.
